Serving Those Who Served: Career Support for Veterans

On this Veterans Day, BridgeWorks reaffirms our commitment to supporting the men and women who have served our country in their transition to civilian careers. Veterans represent some of the most capable, disciplined, and resilient individuals in the workforce. Yet the transition from military to civilian employment is often more challenging than it should be.

The Translation Problem

Veterans frequently possess skills that are directly relevant to civilian occupations. Leadership, logistics management, technical proficiency, teamwork under pressure, and adherence to safety protocols are all competencies that employers value highly. The problem is that these skills are often described in military terminology that civilian hiring managers do not understand.

A veteran who managed a motor pool of forty vehicles has extensive fleet management experience. A former combat medic has clinical skills that translate to healthcare roles. A signals intelligence specialist may have cybersecurity capabilities that technology companies desperately need. But if the resume reads like a military operations order, the hiring manager may never see the connection.

BridgeWorks Veteran Services

Our career services team includes staff with military backgrounds who understand both the veteran experience and civilian hiring expectations. We offer several services specifically designed for transitioning service members and veterans.

Resume Translation. We work one-on-one with veterans to translate their military experience into civilian language. This is not about downplaying military service. It is about ensuring that the skills and accomplishments are communicated in terms that civilian employers recognize and value.

Skills Mapping. During intake, we conduct a detailed assessment that maps military occupational specialties to civilian career paths. Many veterans are surprised to learn how many options are available to them once their skills are properly identified and articulated.

Credential Recognition. Many military training programs lead to certifications that have civilian equivalents, but veterans are not always aware of this. Our team helps identify applicable credentials and, where gaps exist, provides pathways to earn civilian certifications efficiently.

Employer Connection. We maintain a roster of employer partners who actively seek to hire veterans and who understand the unique strengths that military experience brings. These employers have committed to veteran-friendly hiring practices and workplace policies.

Addressing Hidden Challenges

The career transition challenges veterans face extend beyond resume formatting. Many veterans deal with invisible barriers that can undermine employment stability.

Post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, and other service-connected conditions can affect workplace performance if not properly managed. BridgeWorks connects veterans with behavioral health resources through our community partnerships and works with employers to foster understanding and accommodation.

The cultural adjustment from military to civilian workplaces can also be disorienting. The structure, hierarchy, and mission-driven culture of the military do not always have clear parallels in civilian organizations. Our career coaching helps veterans navigate these cultural differences and develop strategies for integrating into new workplace environments.

Employer Perspective

Employers who hire veterans consistently report high satisfaction. Veterans tend to be punctual, mission-oriented, comfortable with structured environments, and effective under pressure. For employers in construction, logistics, manufacturing, and security, these qualities are especially valued.

We encourage employers who have not yet considered veterans as a talent pool to reach out to our employer relations team. The return on investment in veteran hiring is well documented.

A Lasting Commitment

Supporting veterans is not a seasonal initiative for BridgeWorks. It is a year-round commitment embedded in our programming and our organizational values. We are grateful for the service of all veterans and are honored to play a role in their transition to fulfilling civilian careers.

If you are a veteran exploring career options, or if you know a veteran who could benefit from our services, we invite you to contact us. Your next mission starts here.
