Job Searching During the Holidays? Here's Your Strategy

Every year around mid-November, we hear the same concern from participants in our career services program: "Should I just wait until January to start looking for work?" The assumption is that companies shut down their hiring efforts during the holiday season. While it is true that some organizations slow down, the reality is more nuanced, and the holiday season can actually be one of the most strategic times to search for a job.

Why the Holidays Are Not a Hiring Dead Zone

Several factors make the end of the year a productive time for job seekers. First, many companies have annual budgets that must be spent before December 31. If a department has an approved headcount that has not been filled, there is often urgency to get those positions posted and filled before the fiscal year closes.

Second, competition decreases. Because so many job seekers take the holidays off from searching, those who remain active face a smaller candidate pool. Your resume is more likely to get noticed when it is one of fifty rather than one of five hundred.

Third, seasonal hiring creates opportunities. Retail, logistics, hospitality, and food service all ramp up hiring during the holiday season. While some of these positions are temporary, many lead to permanent roles for workers who demonstrate reliability and skill.

Practical Strategies for Holiday Job Searching

Keep Your Momentum. The biggest mistake you can make is stopping entirely. Even if you scale back your efforts, commit to a minimum number of applications per week. Consistency matters more than volume.

Use Holiday Events for Networking. Office parties, community gatherings, and volunteer events all provide opportunities to make connections. You do not need to hand out business cards. Simply be genuine, express interest in what people do, and mention that you are exploring new opportunities.

Follow Up on Pending Applications. If you applied for positions in October or November and have not heard back, the holidays are a reasonable time to send a brief, professional follow-up. Hiring managers may have been delayed by end-of-year responsibilities and will appreciate a polite check-in.

Update Your Online Presence. Use the quieter weeks to refresh your LinkedIn profile, update your resume, and clean up your digital footprint. Recruiters are often planning their January hiring pushes during December, and an updated profile can put you on their radar.

Prepare for January. The first two weeks of January are historically one of the most active hiring periods of the year. Use the holidays to research target companies, practice your interview skills, and line up references so you are ready to move quickly when the new year begins.
